One of the most common questions we receive is:
“How far in advance should I book the Nakasendo Trail?”
The short answer is:
Earlier than most people expect.
Every year, many travelers contact us in the summer hoping to walk the Nakasendo Trail in October or November. Unfortunately, by that time, many of the traditional inns along the route are already fully booked.
In fact, by mid-July this year, we had already reached the point where we had to decline several requests for autumn itineraries simply because suitable accommodation was no longer available.
Why Is It So Difficult to Find Accommodation?
Unlike larger tourist destinations, the historic post towns of the Kiso Valley have only a small number of traditional inns.
Many of these inns are family-run businesses with just a few guest rooms, and some villages have only a handful of places to stay.
When planning a self-guided walk, we need to secure accommodation for every night of your journey. Even if just one night’s accommodation is unavailable, it may become impossible to arrange the itinerary you had in mind.
The Busiest Seasons
Accommodation is particularly limited during:
- Late March to May (spring flowers and fresh greenery)
- Mid-October to mid-November (autumn colours)
These are the most popular times to walk the Nakasendo, and rooms often sell out many months in advance.
When Should You Book?
We generally recommend:

| Summer & Winter | 3–6 months in advance |
If you’re planning an autumn walk, contacting us before the end of the previous year will usually give you the best chance of securing your preferred itinerary.
What If You Book Later?
Don’t worry—we’re always happy to check availability.
However, if accommodation in the historic post towns is already full, we may need to:
- Suggest different travel dates
- Recommend a shorter itinerary
- Arrange accommodation outside the busiest post towns
- Or, in some cases, let you know that we are unfortunately unable to arrange the trip
Our goal is always to find the best possible solution based on what’s available.
Don’t Give Up If Your Preferred Inns Are Full
Even if accommodation in famous post towns such as Magome, Tsumago, or Narai is no longer available, that doesn’t necessarily mean your Nakasendo adventure is over.
The Kiso Valley is far more than just its most famous post towns.
There are many beautiful places throughout the region where you can experience peaceful forests, mountain scenery, quiet villages, local culture, and genuine Japanese hospitality.

Depending on availability, we may recommend places such as:
- Walking the spectacular Torii Pass between Yabuhara and Narai
- Exploring the historic town of Kiso-Fukushima and its surrounding mountain trails
- Visiting Kiso-Hirasawa, renowned for its traditional lacquerware craftsmanship
- Discovering quieter sections of the Nakasendo with fewer visitors and equally beautiful scenery

Rather than simply saying, “Everything is fully booked,” we’ll always do our best to create a memorable itinerary using our local knowledge of the Kiso Valley.
